2. The Itinerary
Day 1: Embarkation in Punta Arenas
From 10:00 AM, you are welcome at the Explorers House in Punta Arenas. At 3:00 PM, a group transfer will take you to the port for embarkation. During the journey through the Strait of Magellan, you will learn more about the history of this famous sea route from the expedition team.
Day 2: At Sea
Enjoy the amenities on board and the daily program as you set course for the Falkland Islands (Malvinas). An exciting lecture series begins.
Day 3: Saunders Island and Carcass Island
In the morning, you visit Saunders Island and enjoy the long white sandy beach. During this wilderness experience, the main attractions are observing rockhopper penguins, nesting black-browed albatrosses, and sub-Antarctic gentoo penguins. In the afternoon, you explore Carcass Island. Here you have the opportunity for a light hike to the settlement, birdwatching, and can experience a typical Falkland Islands tea ceremony.
Day 4: Port Stanley
Join the expedition team on a guided tour of Port Stanley – or discover the city individually. Let the special atmosphere sink in, visit a local pub, visit the maritime museum or the church, browse for souvenirs or stroll along Ross Road to the memorials on the waterfront.
Day 5 to Day 6: At Sea
During the journey to South Georgia, you can attend lectures on the history and wildlife of the archipelago. Together with experienced guides, you keep a lookout for wildlife from the lounge or outer decks. With a bit of luck, you may spot impressive seabirds such as albatrosses and petrels, as well as various whale species.
Day 7: Elsehul Bay
Evening Zodiac cruise in Elsehul Bay, depending on the crossing and permissions from the South Georgia government.
Day 8: Grytviken, Fortuna Bay / Stromness
Your first landing is in Grytviken. You pass through customs and then visit the historic site with the South Georgia Museum and Ernest Shackleton’s grave. In the afternoon, you go ashore in Fortuna Bay / Stromness to observe king penguins. Here you learn more about Shackleton and his expedition, and there is the possibility of an optional 2-3 hour “Shackleton Walk”.
Day 9: Salisbury Plain and Prion Island
In the morning, you visit Salisbury Plain to observe more king penguins and breathtaking landscapes. In the afternoon, you explore Prion Island, where you can see nesting wandering albatrosses.
Day 10: St. Andrews Bay, Drygalsky Fjord
Morning visit to St. Andrews Bay, home to one of the largest king penguin colonies and impressive elephant seals. Weather permitting, afternoon ship cruise through Drygalski Fjord.
Day 11 to Day 12: At Sea
During the journey, you enjoy breathtaking views and have the opportunity to meet the expedition team, who will tell you more about the region, wildlife, and the history of Antarctic exploration. This is also an excellent opportunity to relax and get in the mood for the upcoming adventure.
Day 13: Elephant Island
In the afternoon, you explore Elephant Island. A landing is unlikely, but you see the island from the ship or, if sea conditions allow, from the Zodiac.
Day 14 to Day 17: Antarctic Peninsula & South Shetland Islands
You cruise along the Antarctic Peninsula and through the South Shetland Islands, visiting places in the Antarctic Sound and Gerlache Strait. Possible destinations include Gourdin Island, Brown Bluff, Half Moon Island, Deception Island, Wilhelmina Bay, the Lemaire Channel, Cuverville Island, the Melchior Islands, or other impressive locations.
Day 18 to Day 19: At Sea
Time to rest, reflect, and enjoy the vastness of the sea – ideal for processing impressions and regaining strength.
Day 20: Disembarkation in Ushuaia
