1. Highlights of the Route

The subantarctic Falkland Islands and South Georgia are home to one of the most unique and abundant wildlife populations on our planet. With beaches populated by fur seals, elephant seals, and hundreds of thousands of penguins, this is one of the most breathtaking natural spectacles you will ever experience. You will have ample time to explore the fascinating history of the region, which dates back to the grand times of the “Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration” in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. With this journey, you have a combination of the best of Antarctic wildlife and the endless ice landscapes of the Antarctic Peninsula.

Arrival Package:

Two pre-cruise nights with breakfast in one of the best hotels in Ushuaia along with the transfer to the ship are included in the travel price.

Post Itinerary Package:

You can fly back home, plan a subsequent program in Patagonia yourself, or have us plan a trip for you to the highlights in Argentina and Chile afterwards.

2. The Itinerary

You arrive one day before your expedition and stay overnight at Ushuaia’s finest luxury hotel, the Arakur Resort & Spa. You can relax in the infinity pool, explore Ushuaia, or take a walk on the hiking trails surrounding the resort.
In the late afternoon, you will be transferred to the ship. After meeting the expedition team, there will be a safety and orientation briefing, followed by a welcome dinner with the captain. Thus begins your sea journey!
As you sail south, important briefings on environmental regulations and expedition safety take place. Your science and environmental experts will tell you about the wildlife, history, and geology of the areas you will soon explore.
You will explore some of the westernmost settled outposts of the Falklands, a remote archipelago in the South Atlantic known for its rugged terrain and cliff-lined coast. You visit albatross and penguin colonies and keep an eye out for rockhopper, king, and Magellanic penguin colonies.
Next, you visit the largest island of the archipelago, Stanley, which is a bustling center of activity in a sheltered harbor. Here you can view the fascinating exhibits at the Falkland Islands Museum, dedicated to maritime exploration, natural history, and the 1982 Falklands War. You also visit Gypsy Cove, part of the Cape Pembroke peninsula, which is a nature reserve. Magellanic penguins breed here, nesting in underground burrows. Other native bird species include black-crowned night herons, meadowlarks, two-banded plovers, and upland and kelp geese. The nearby Ordinance Point is the final resting place for several cannons.
South Georgia is often called the Serengeti of the Southern Ocean, and it’s easy to see why when you observe the millions (not a typo!) of breeding penguins, seals, and seabirds. Breathtaking mountain landscapes, majestically shaped icebergs, glaciers in all directions, and a rich historical heritage complement the incredible wildlife you can observe on your journey along the lee coast of South Georgia. You also visit the historic whaling station Grytviken with its small cemetery where the great Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton is buried.

As you head south, you continue your informative presentations and wildlife observations while the icebergs grow larger and more numerous.
Here you explore a variety of scenic bays and famous harbors, maneuvering through iceberg-filled channels as you pass a multitude of wildlife. You stop at several active scientific bases and historic landing sites while observing the many penguin species, seals, and whales along the rugged coasts and in the sea.
You sail north and cross the legendary Drake Passage once again. You celebrate the conclusion of your expedition with a special slideshow, photography awards, and a final meal together.
In the morning, you disembark in Ushuaia, where you take a flight to Buenos Aires or can stay in the city to experience more sights and adventures.
