1. Highlights of the Route

Your journey aboard Le Commandant Charcot begins with the first glimpse of this breathtakingly elegant ship, capable of sailing in the most extreme regions of our planet. You stand at the beginning of an adventure that will take you to the edge of the world, to the continent that has never been inhabited by any people: Antarctica. But even if this land belongs to no one, it has been the scene of the greatest expeditions, of the heroism that some people display. From the Antarctic Peninsula, Le Commandant Charcot takes you to the Bellingshausen Sea and its unknown islands. With the utmost respect for the regions visited, this 15-day exploration leads to the far south, always in the wake of the legendary man after whom the ship was named. After crossing the mythical Drake Passage, haunted by winds and soared over by cape petrels, you catch sight of the last continent on the horizon. It has been over a century since Jean-Baptiste Charcot undertook his first journey to Antarctica, but his feats still resonate and his traces are tangible here. His first expedition with the ship Le Français established his legend and marked the Salpêtrière Bay. A little further south, during his second expedition, he explored Marguerite Bay. He names this mountainous, magnificent land after his wife and the island Pourquoi-Pas after his ship of the same name. At the exit of the Lemaire Channel, Petermann Island still recalls the wintering of this fabulous expedition. As soon as you head for the Bellingshausen Sea, conditions gradually become more extreme. The ice fills the horizon, the pack ice expands, gigantic icebergs drift around you. The approach to Charcot Island promises intense emotions and offers you the unique feeling of being among the few privileged to see it. Throughout the journey, our team of passionate experts traces the details of these historical feats with you and shares its in-depth knowledge of the wildlife and landscapes. You will be able to observe Adelie, gentoo, and chinstrap penguins and perhaps some young emperor penguins at the edge of the pack ice. Leopard seals, crabeater and Weddell seals, humpback whales, minke whales, and orcas also inhabit the Southern Ocean, on which you will travel like the legendary men before you.

2. The Itinerary

The capital of the Argentine province of Tierra del Fuego, Ushuaia, is considered the gateway to the “white continent” and the South Pole. Called “El fin del mundo” by Argentinians, Ushuaia is indeed located almost at the end of the world, nestled in the protection of the mountains and surrounded by fertile plains, inhabited by numerous animal species.
Use the days in the Drake Passage to familiarize yourself with the ship and deepen your knowledge about Antarctica. The expedition leader will introduce you to the IAATO code of conduct, which sets guidelines for shore landings, and explain how the Zodiac excursions work.

When he discovered this island surrounded by pack ice in 1910 aboard the Pourquoi Pas? during the mapping of Alexander I Island, Jean-Baptiste Charcot did not get closer than 40 miles to it.
The Bellingshausen Sea, which extends from the west of the Antarctic Peninsula to the Amundsen Sea, was named after the Russian admiral and explorer who was probably the first to discover Antarctica in 1820.
Experience magical moments at sea aboard Le Commandant Charcot, the first Polar Class PC2 polar exploration vessel capable of venturing deep into the heart of the ice, into the seas and oceans that pack ice makes inaccessible year-round to conventionally built passenger ships. On board Le Commandant Charcot, there is oceanographic equipment and scientists selected by a panel of experts.
Each iceberg is more majetic than the last, covering Marguerite Bay in intense deep blue, one of the most beautiful regions of Antarctica. To the north, it borders the mountainous Adelaide Island, to the south the George VI Sound and Alexander I Island, and to the east the Fallières Coast.
Le Commandant Charcot approaches the shores of Pourquoi Pas Island, which John Riddoch Rymill named in honor of Jean-Baptiste Charcot in the 1930s.
Let yourself be amazed by this unique place. The mythical Antarctic Peninsula still exerts a real fascination today and promises its visitors unforgettable moments. Throughout your adventure in this ice scenery, you will sail through spectacular and subtle shades of blue and white, surrounded by extraordinary fauna.
If there is a place, a sea, a passage that visitors, researchers, and seasoned sailors alike fear, it is probably the Drake Passage.
